Google's AI Overviews: what businesses need to know now
Since March 2025 Google also shows AI answers above the search results in Germany. What's behind it, what Google itself recommends – and what you can do now.
Since 26 March 2025, AI Overviews are also available in Germany. For many searches, a short AI-written answer appears at the very top – with links to the websites it draws on. For businesses this means: if you appear as a source, you get seen. If you're missing, you slide down.
What are AI Overviews?
Google combines content from several websites into one answer. The overview doesn't appear for every search, only when Google's systems consider it helpful. At launch it was initially shown to signed-in users aged 18 and over.
Do you need special optimisation?
According to Google, no. Its official guidance for site owners says, in essence, that there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations for AI Overviews. The requirement is the same as for normal search: your page must be indexed by Google and eligible to be shown with a snippet. No special files, markup or extra data are needed.
What Google recommends
- Allow Google to crawl your pages – including at your hosting provider and in robots.txt
- Link to important pages from other pages on your site
- Offer a good page experience, especially on phones
- Provide important content as text, not just in images
- Add relevant images and videos
- Keep structured data consistent with the visible text
- Keep your Business Profile and product data up to date
- Write helpful content for people – not for search engines
How can you tell whether it works?
Google counts clicks from AI Overviews as normal search traffic in Search Console – in the Performance report under the “Web” search type. There is no separate report just for AI answers. The easiest way to find out whether your business is mentioned is to ask your customers' typical questions yourself – or have them asked automatically on a regular basis.
What you can do now
- 1
Check indexing
Check in Google Search Console whether your most important pages are indexed.
- 2
Answer questions clearly
Answer your customers' most common questions – briefly and right at the top of the page.
- 3
Back up facts
Give figures with a source. Backed-up statements are more credible for readers and search engines.
- 4
Maintain your profile
Keep your Google Business Profile up to date: opening hours, services, photos.
- 5
Check regularly
Ask typical customer questions and see who gets mentioned – on Google and in AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
